Lake Blanche: 6.8 Miles Into the Wasatch

Lake Blanche: 6.8 Miles Into the Wasatch

Mill B South Fork Trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon, thirty minutes from downtown. 6.8 miles round trip, about 1,400 feet of gain. Moderate to strenuous. The reward is an alpine lake sitting in the shoulder of the Wasatch, blue water ringed by pale granite and the silhouette of Mount Olympus.

The trail climbs from shade into open air through switchbacks that reveal wildflowers — lupine, penstemon, small poppies against granite. Canyon walls grow taller, the creek sings louder, and Mount Olympus peeks through the pines. Then the lake appears, glassy and still, holding the sky and surrounding cliffs in balance.

Late July through early September. Wildflowers at their boldest, water deep enough for real reflections. Afternoon storms arrive fast, so mornings are better. Parking is limited — sunrise or weekday to avoid the scramble. Bring 2-3 liters of water, layers, sun protection, real boots. Leash the dog.
